Background
After attending dancing lessons since a young age and enjoying textiles classes all through high school, costume design was a natural progression forward. Dance, being a huge part of my childhood, was the biggest influence towards costume specifically, and learning to sew and make clothes was an exciting part of high school being able to design and construct all formal dresses and making one of items of clothes for myself,
Inspiration
Female – Late baroq style costume with heavy influences from both traditional and modern Japanese culture. The dress is a full 18th century gown with boned corset and large petticoat, but portrayed with bright ‘harajuku’ style colours and textures, and is accompanied by a geisha style obi, and also hair and makeup.
Male – The mystical ‘Genie of the Lamp’. This blue genie is inspired by both traditional Indian and Middle Eastern attire, however has old English gentleman’s charm with his conservative vest and waistcoat. He is adorned with jewellery and embellishments and is painted blue from head to toe.
Future aspirations
Travel with interest in traditional and modern clothing from various cultures; further study in various fields of costume design and construction; and working my way towards a costume career, hopefully in dance, live theatre or music.
